October,29th, I attended the 2015 2nd Asian Small and Medium Entrepreneur Conference in Korea as a volunteer. The conference was organized by the Asian Council for Small Business (ACSB). The conference lasted from Oct. 28 to Oct. 31. Four days of conference was held around the core topic “the Globalization of the Asian SMEs”.

The first two days were tour to the companies in Korea. The delegates from Asian countries visited CJ Group, a company initiated as a small entrepreneur but developed into a big company group with manufacturing, entertainment, food production and biotechnology. The CJ group is regarded as a successful exemplar of development of small business. In the 3rd day of the conference, I had an honor to participate in the group session of the meeting. Officials of Asian countries were invited to present the policies their countries are enforcing in order to aid in the growing of small business. During the afternoon Korean succession, the owner of the Korean Electronic Development Company made a speech that creativity and innovations are the keys to the small and medium entrepreneurs. He came out with the 3D printing technology. He stated, it is the scientific progress made decades ago, but the technology is not fully utilized and developed. He expected that this newly adapted technology would lower the cost of the production, thus magnify the profits. He also pointed out that most people launch a small business for living, not actually for improvement; this is the reason why 90% of small entrepreneurs would eventually fail. In the next day of group session, I was assigned to the room presenting the research of each delegate. One presentation impressed me a lot. The speech was given by a Bulgarian economist. The professor enumerated several factors that might be needed to the successful launching of a small business. These factors included the costs of the production, the price, the attitude of the workers, etc. During the presentation, he pointed out an important concept of performance and success. Good performance does not necessarily equals to successful entrepreneur. More specifically, good performance is the ostensible and partial conducts of the business while success represents the final result.

During the four days of volunteer works, my main job was to arrange the meetings, guide the guests and welcome the delegates. Though I had few chance to actually join in the different sessions, it was a good opportunity to observe how the seminars work, what the economists are researching and how the experts present their ideas. Another impression I received during the conference was that everyone was not only absorbing the ideas, but are thinking critically upon the matters. Also, I got more chance to interact with people who are much older and who have abstruse knowledge in the field. I was actually very nervous at first, but during the group session, I greeted with a Japanese professor who was assigned to the group I was responsible. When I introduced that I am a high school student from China, he talked about his previous job in China. We talked about the political conflicts exist between China and Japan, and agreed that people in two countries are actually very friendly to each to other. The professor encouraged me to experience more and do not rush to make decision for the future when I talked him about my worries. It was a pleasant talk and I was highly inspired.

Attending in the Asian SMEs Conference was a precious experience for me. What I encountered everyday was brand-new for me. Thus the work required some more of courage and diligence. This social experience was very impressive for me.
