Journal on UCLA campus tour
The first impression the UCLA campus left me was its vastness. It took me about half an hour to walk from the one of the campus parking lots to the Ackerman Students Union center where the tour began. When I asked a passenger how could I get to the global viewpoint center, he laughed and told me that the reason why I cannot find it was because it changes name almost every minute. What it meant for me was that UCLA is a place where moves in fast tempo constantly and that it always undergoes changes bravely.
UCLA was run by the quarter system, which is fairly different from the semester system run by my school. The tour guide who was in the senior year of UCLA commented that the quarter system had more advantage over the semester system in his opinion. Since the quarter system divided a whole school year into three shorter quarters of ten weeks, students are able to eliminate the classes they don't like quickly and select preferred classes with more open opportunities.
During the tour, I also found out a fact that differed from my postulate. I thought UCLA must run by the class of several hundred since it is such a big public school with thousands of students. However, the tour guide introduced that the lecture room with the largest capacity can merely accommodate two hundred people, which means that a class can never exceeds 200. This fact comforted me because I was worrying about the lessening chance I can get with the increasing number of students in the class.
Two of the libraries of UCLA I got in had totally distinct styles. One was very modern with presentation room, self studying spots and some coffee shops. The other one with classic style was my favorite. When I walked into it, it made me think of the scene of Harry Potter. And everyone in the library was very quietly working on something. It reminded me of a sentence I saw in UCLA's promotion video that everyone in UCLA was highly motivated by something they have great passion in. It was a type of studying environment I valued greatly. One of the reasons why I want to get into a good university is that challenging schools attract more inspired students and students themselves motivate each other and form better environment. This is a teaching I got from my high school life. The indolent atmosphere of my high school once immersed me into an abyss of self-complacency and emptiness and when I realized that it was not a responsible way to live my life, I was already behind of other students who were motivated by their environment constantly.
I tried to imagine myself in the campus as suggested. I would be the one in the library who study very hard. And I would like to meet a lot of people there too. But it would be very important to keep my pace steady and solid my goal in such a big environment.
