[原创]美国大学文书的“奇葩”究竟是怎样的？

       大家好，作为一个曾经在南加大就读美本的学生，来聊聊美本申请文书，此时时刻也想起了自己曾经申请的文书，今昔对比，也让我对文书有了更多的了解和感悟，今天就和大家来简单谈谈。
      
       美国大学的文书一直是申请时同学们很关注的话题，所以今天从一名美本学生的角度，对USC南加州大学、UChicago芝加哥大学和UVA弗吉尼亚大学的文书做一个点评，因为南加州大学是我本科的学校，芝加哥大学向来是文书难，UVA今年第一次加入了ED（Early Decision），所以文书也就格外重要了。
      
       一、南加州大学（USC）文书点评
      
       题目：
      
       1. USC believes that one learns best when interacting with people of different backgrounds, experiences and perspectives. Tell us about a time you were exposed to a new idea or when your beliefs were challenged by another point of view. Please discuss the significance of the experience and its effect on you.
      
       点评：这是一篇比较正常的文书，题目要求从叙事性的角度谈谈申请者之前的经历和在文化、思想和知识上所受到的挑战，并谈谈这次经历的重要性。我认为，既然是一次经历，应该从微观的角度开始入笔，其实对经历本身，题目并没有给出任何限制，无论接受与否，招生官希望看到的是申请者有包容性和对不同观点具有批判性思维的宝贵品质。
      
       2. USC faculty place an emphasis on interdisciplinary academic opportunities. Describe something outside of your intended academic focus about which you are interested in learning.
      
       点评：这篇文书主要是探究申请人的课外兴趣，众所周知USC是一所鼓励跨学科教育（interdisciplinary studies）的学校，对于学有余力的同学来说，在自己的研究方向以外，有一个坚持时间很久的兴趣，是招生官十分看重的个人品质。我认为，对于这个题目，最重要的是什么激发了申请人的兴趣，以及申请人从这个兴趣中得到了什么收获。
      
       3. What is something about yourself that is essential to understanding you?
      
       点评：这篇是我当时选择的文书题目，因为个人认为是三篇文书题目中写的，毕竟只有自己最了解自己，所以可选择的内容比较灵活。例如，我当时描述自己是一个“现实的理想主义者”，因为敢于去想别人认为不太现实的一些事情和目标，但却又能脚踏实地采取行动，并一步一步完成这些目标。在这三篇文书中，这篇算是比较有开放性的一篇文书。
      
       二、芝加哥大学（UChicago）文书点评
      
       题目：
      
       1. Cats have nine lives, Pac-Man has 3 lives, and radioactive isotopes have half-lives. How many lives does something else—conceptual or actual—have, and why?
      
       —Inspired by Kedrick Shin, Class of 2019
      
       点评：猫有九条命，吃豆人（Pac-Man）有三条命，但这些都是人类人为创造出来的，因此，这篇文书主要考察申请人的想象力，通过一个微观的问题——某事、某物有几条命——引出之所以产生这种现象的原因，招生官可以发现申请人在深刻问题上的观点和兴趣。
      
       2. If there’s a limited amount of matter in the universe, how can Olive Garden (along with other restaurants and their concepts of food infinity) offer truly unlimited soup, salad, and breadsticks? Explain this using any method of analysis you wish—physics, biology, economics, history, theology… the options, as you can tell, are endless.

       点评：如果想以这篇文书为题目，首先先要弄明白为什么Olive Garden可以提供无限的汤、沙拉和面包棍。但是这个问题实在有点太抽象了，相信大多数同学都不会选择这篇文书，个人认为可以排在年度奇葩文书题目第二位。
      
       3. A hot dog might be a sandwich, and cereal might be a soup, but is a ______ a ______?
      
       —Inspired by Arya Muralidharan, Class of 2021 (and dozens of others who, this year and in past years, have submitted the question “Is a hot dog a sandwich,” to which we reply, “maybe”)
      
       点评：个人认为的年度最奇葩文书题目，完全看不懂。
      
       4.“Fiction reveals truth that reality obscures.” – Jessamyn West
      
       —Inspired by Elizabeth Mansfield, Class of 2020
      
       点评：现实掩盖了真相，而科幻作品恰恰揭露了这些所谓的真相，这个题目很有科幻风，虽然很短，但是给申请人以很大的想象空间。个人认为，其实很多关于环保或现代科技对人类影响的作品都可以和这个文书题目挂上钩，例如美国的纪录片<An Inconvenient Truth>（难以忽视的真相），有较多相关知识积累的小伙伴可以选择这个题目。
      
       5. UChicago has international campus centers around the world, but we don’t have any interplanetary, interstellar, or interdimensional campuses… yet! Propose a spot in time or space, in this or any universe, for a new UChicago campus. What types of courses would be taught at this site? What cultural experiences await students who study there?
      
       —Inspired by Peter Jasperse, Class of 2022
      
       点评：又是一篇脑洞大开的文书。根据题目，虽然芝大有很多国际校区中心，但是暂时还没有宇宙、星际或是其他维度的校园。如果让申请人任意选择时间和地点创建芝大校区，会有什么课程和文化体验等待着大家呢？个人建议可以联系自己比较感兴趣或擅长的学术领域来写这篇文书，并结合创建假想校区的时间和地点，通过创意和创新精神打动招生官。
      
       6.“Don’t be afraid to pick past prompts! I liked some of the ones from previous years more than those made newly available for my year. Also, don’t worry about the ‘correct’ way to interpret a question. If there exists a correct way to interpret the prompt I chose, it certainly was not my answer.”

       点评：这个文书题目提醒我们，芝加哥大学招生官希望看到申请人创意地完成文书写作，而不是千篇一律的正确答案，任何一种观点/态度都是大学有可能欣赏的。对于问题本身，招生官也提醒我们不止有一种解读的方法，只要能够充分论证自己的观点，无论怎样分析和理解这些先前给定的prompt都是值得提倡的。
      
       7.In the spirit of adventurous inquiry (and with the encouragement of one of our current students!) choose one of our past prompts (or create a question of your own). Be original, creative, thought provoking. Draw on your best qualities as a writer, thinker, visionary, social critic, sage, citizen of the world, or future citizen of the University of Chicago; take a little risk, and have fun!
      
       点评：从之前的题目中任选其一，或自己创作一个题目，比较灵活，在此不展开讨论。
      
       三、弗吉尼亚大学（UVA）文书点评
      
       题目：
      
       1. What’s your favorite word and why?
      
       点评：这篇文书的题目是：你最喜欢的单词是什么以及为什么。单词可以是一个名词、一个形容词、或者一个动词。从这个角度来说，申请人的选择范围是非常大的，不过建议不要选择过于宽泛的词汇，例如happy、success、future等。因为申请人自己最了解自己，所以可以想想自己真正最喜欢的单词是什么，通过哪些事件（或相关的人或群体）获得了启发，以及这个单词给自己带来现实中或精神上的帮助。
      
       2. We are a community with quirks, both in language and in traditions. Describe one of your quirks and why it is part of who you are.
      
       点评：因为题目中说明了UVA是一所有“quirks”的学校，因此这篇文书需要申请人通过查阅学校官网、咨询学长学姐等方式，对UVA做充足的school research。如果能把UVA的quirks和申请人的quirks结合在一起，个人认为，对申请UVA是非常加分的。
      
       3. Student self-governance, which encourages student investment and initiative, is a hallmark of the UVA culture. In her fourth year at UVA, Laura Nelson was inspired to create Flash Seminars, one-time classes which facilitate high-energy discussion about thought-provoking topics outside of traditional coursework. If you created a Flash Seminar, what idea would you explore and why?
      
       点评：根据文书题目，UVA是一所非常鼓励学生自我管理和主动性的大学，学生创建的所谓“Flash Seminar”也应该是宏观的和对他人有启发性的。其实这篇文书比较好写，例如可以写申请人比较了解的话题，并在文书中充分探讨自己不同于其他申请人的想法。个人认为，想法本身并没有对错，最重要的是作者独特的想法能否说服并打动招生官。
      
       4. UVA students paint messages on Beta Bridge when they want to share information with our community. What would you paint on Beta Bridge and why is this your message?
      
       点评：这篇文书的题目是，如果让你来分享信息给UVA的学生社群，你会分享什么信息，以及为什么要分享这些信息。我认为，作为美国学生背景不同的申请者，我们其实是有优势的，因为无论从文化角度还是对特定事物的看法，我们都有比较独特的观点。个人建议如果选本题目，应该从较为宏观的角度入手，尽量满足多元化和普世性的要求，选择的话题不要仅适用于一个小的群体，稍微广一些，这样才能让读者（招生官）易于接受。
      
       5. UVA students are charged with living honorably and upholding a Community of Trust. Give us an example of a community that is important to you and how you worked to strengthen that community.
      
       点评：这篇文书的题目是：列举一个对你重要的团体，并说明你怎样努力让这个团体越来越好。这个题目比较适合在课内（或课外）有丰富团体生活的同学，例如一个班级、一个社团，或一个社会组织等。个人认为，申请人最重要的是如何表达出该团体对自己的重要性，并找到自己在该团体中的位置，可以考虑一下team leader以外其他的角色以避免落入俗套。
