[原创]“精明至上”-加州大学伯克利

现如今为何说加州伯克利（简称UCB）是一个“精明至上”的大学呢？这一切都源于今年2018申请季的其中一枚伯克利录取。当我们的一名学生经过漫长的waiting list等待之后，终于如愿以偿拿到加州伯克利录取的那一刻，我们和学生都无比的兴奋！但是当我们仔细阅读学校的录取信的时候，我们发现了一些小区别，关键词我们锁定了“Pathways”。（中文可理解为：衔接，桥梁）何为伯克利的Pathways? 伯克利的这个Pathways具体是做什么的？沃得天下今天来追根溯源一下这个缘由。

       从这枚录取信中我们可以清晰地看到几点：
      
       1.学生从waiting list中被录取之后的学院为伯克利的文理学院。
      
       2.学生如果想接受伯克利的录取，那么需要选择一种新大一的Pathway的方式，方可入学。
      
       看到方才这种情形，沃得天下告诉大家这一切答案还要从最权威的伯克利官方网站去了解，今天在这里为大家做一个完整的Pathway解读。
      
       首先引入我们眼帘的是UCB被录取的本科新生Pathways解读：
       从这段说明中，我们可以得知：
      
       1.如获得UCB录取为本科新生大一，UCB可能会要求学生选择第一年的Pathway作为开始入学的方式。所有的Pathway方式均可以享受到伯克利最优质的课程、住房以及各类课外活动等资源。
      
       2.如果是从waiting list上获得录取的学生，那么也可能会要去选择一种适合自己的Pathway方式。UCB知道这种方式可能会引发学生的担忧或者失落感，但是UCB已经保证虽然是Pathway方式入读，但是被这种方式录取的学生们依旧是从竞争激烈的申请者们脱颖而出的人才，UCB今年一共只录取13000名本科新生。
      
       那么我们下面继续详细了解UCB的各种Pathway到底都是什么？（来源：UCB官方网站）
      
       第一种Traditional Pathway（传统意义上的衔接，桥梁）
      
       The traditional pathway allows you to have access to the traditional courses and the traditional first-year student experience when you start at Berkeley.
      
       传统的桥梁允许学生进修传统的学术课程；自学生在伯克利起始，传统桥梁会引领学生进入真正的“伯克利式”学习。
      
       第二种Global Edge（全球化边缘项目）
       Start your freshman year in an unique way. Spend your summer at Berkeley, then fall semester in London. Through Global Edge you will join a small group of fellow freshmen for eight weeks of summer courses, getting a head start on the Berkeley experience. In the fall, your group travels to London to take Berkeley courses at the UC London Center. Return to campus for spring semester with many academic requirements completed and a new global perspective. 
      
       Global Edge is available to students admitted to the College of Letters and Science and the College of Natural Resources.
      
       Global Edge is mandatory for students who are admitted to the Global Management Program through the Haas School of Business.

       Housing 住宿
      
       You will have the option of living in the Unit 2 Residence Halls or your own accommodations during summer. Located three blocks from campus, Unit 2 offers double and triple occupancy rooms, many of which offer spectacular views of the San Francisco Bay Area and the beautiful Berkeley hills. Each hall is equipped with a central bathroom on every floor, four floor lounges with balconies, and a main lounge with comfortable furnishings for relaxing.
      
       The Unit 2 complex includes an Academic Computing Center that features multiple workstations, printing, and on-site computer consultation. All rooms, lounge spaces, and common areas are equipped with wireless Internet. Live-in Residential Life staff provides community development activities and social programs.
      
       Meals 餐食
      
       Residence hall dining is offered at Crossroads, our largest and organic-certified dining facility featuring all-you-care-to-eat meals with a wide variety of cuisines. The meal points provided with your Summer Sessions Housing meal plan may also be used to purchase a la carte food items at any open retail location on campus.
      
       Extracurriculars 课外活动
      
       Social activities will be held every Thursday evening in Unit 2 throughout the summer. You will also have access to the Recreational Sports Facility as well as a transit pass to ride local AC Transit buses free of charge, including Transbay buses to San Francisco.
      
       Orientation 迎新会
      
       Upon arrival to UC Berkeley in the summer, students will attend an on-campus orientation. The on-campus orientation is an introduction to UC Berkeley and the Global Edge program. Orientation topics include academic advising, spring schedule planning, course registration, financial aid, and more.
      
       Support 项目支持
      
       During the summer program in Berkeley, Summer Sessions & Study Abroad staff provides advising and support pre-departure. Live-in residential staff provides community development activities and social programs in the residence halls while the Student Learning Center offers tutoring and academic support to Summer Sessions students.
       秋季转战英国伦敦
      
       UC London Center: （加州伯克利在伦敦中心的相关介绍）The UC London Center is based near the British Museum and University of London in the heart of London's Bloomsbury district, a vibrant, historic area of central London well known for its formal garden squares. With the UC London Center as your base, you will have the opportunity to explore the city and experience British culture before returning to Berkeley.        London Student Housing 伦敦住宿
      
       Student Residences in Islington or the South Bank - Participants will live in shared multiple-bedroom apartments in one of two student residences in Islington or the South Bank. Both residences are conveniently located in Central London:
      
       • The Student Residence in Islington is centrally located between Angel and Old Street, near the shops and restaurants of Islington's trendy Upper Street, as well as public transport links to London's West End and the fashionable districts around Bishopsgate, including Brick Lane and Spitalfield.
      
       • The Student Residence in the South Bank is centrally located opposite London Waterloo Mainline Rail and Underground station on the bank of the River Thames, within walking distance of public attractions such as the National Theatre and the Hayward Gallery, and many riverside gathering spaces.
      
       Apartment layouts vary, and are comprised of double and triple occupancy rooms, furnished with a bed, closet or armoire and linens for each student. All occupants in the apartment have access to a shared living room or common area, a shared bathroom, and fully equipped kitchen. Kitchen facilities include a small stove top, refrigerator, dishes and basic cooking utensils. Residences include on-site laundry facilities. Commuting to the London Study Center takes 20-25 minutes on public transportation or 25-35 minutes walking.
      
       Meals 就餐
      
       The program does not provide meals（伦敦项目中不提供饭食，需要自备）, but you will have the option of preparing your meals in your apartment kitchen or purchasing your own meals from local establishments.
      
       Orientation 迎新会
      
       During the summer in Berkeley, you will participate in workshops covering academic preparation, intercultural learning, health and safety abroad, and tips for first-time travelers. Upon arrival in London, you will participate in a weeklong orientation that includes an introduction to UC London Center facilities, a city tour, how to use local transportation, academic and cultural preparation, health and safety in London, and a cultural day trip.
      
       Support 项目支持
      
       While in London, staff from the UC Education Abroad Program and Accent International provide student support and emergency assistance. A Resident Assistant lives with participants in program housing, organizes group activities, and provides live-in support.
      
       Extracurriculars 课外活动
      
       Program activities include a visit to Oxford during orientation week and an overnight group excursion during the mid-semester break. You can also choose to participate in any of the extracurricular activities organized for UC students by the UC Education Abroad Program (additional costs may apply).

       第三种Fall Program for Freshmen (FPF，秋季本科新生项目)
       FPF is a small, collaborative learning community for first-year students in their first semester in the College of Letters and Science. You enroll in smaller classes and make close connections with your instructors, classmates, and FPF advisor. FPF is like a small liberal arts college with the resources and opportunities of a large research university. FPF is available to students admitted to the College of Letters and Science.
       FPF项目是一个拥有小容量版型，可以让新大一的学生在伯克利的文理学院里进行和同学导师最亲近的沟通和交流。FPF项目致力于创造一个类似于小型的“文理学院”，这个特殊的小型可以依靠强大的加州伯克利作为依托，享受伯克利校园给予的各种教育资源。另外，FPF项目是为录取到文理学院学生所开设的Pathway项目。
      
       Berkeley is big. FPF is small. “伯克利很大，FPF项目很小”
      
       Our small size offers a lot of benefits for a new student at Berkeley. For the fall semester, you get to take classes with the same cohort of peers, make friends from day-one, and explore all that Berkeley has to offer. Your advisors and instructors hold office hours right on site, making them much more accessible to you.
      
       FPF classes are held on our own mini campus, just three blocks south of Berkeley’s central campus, across the street from Unit 2 Residence Halls. Our class sizes range from 14 to 100 seats, and 80% of our classes are under 50 seats. These small class sizes allow for high-impact learning. Many of these same courses on campus are taught in 300 to 1,000-person lectures!  
      
       If you’d rather be anonymous and be part of the crowd, you may want something else. FPF is a close-knit community where people are going to know you by name and take an interest in your success. Want in?
